The Berlin Wall of Tech and the Asian startup dilemma

Baidu versus Google, Huawei versus Cisco, Renren versus Facebook, Tudou versus Youtube, WeChat versus WhatsApp, Weibo versus Twitter... over the past decade as China boomed, there seemed to have been the erection of The Berlin Wall of Tech. Today's consumer as well as enterprise startups are forced to decide which part of the wall they belong. With the world only having two large markets -- The US and China, how should Asian startups decide? This decision is even trickier for Taiwanese startups -- intuitively, the Chinese market seem to be much closer -- in terms of the language, the culture, and the location. However, there seems to be certain gaps between Taiwan and China that's just too difficult to overcome. The US market, on the other hand, is a market that Taiwan has always been familiar with, and one that is extremely open to Taiwanese startups. Senior Bloomberg journalist Tim Culpan takes us deep into this dilemma.
